// Thoughts in pp

Miss F and my attempts in post processing in order to avoid the keen digital look. For me it’s always a fine line between being too evident on one side and being too hesitant on the other. I’d really like to get a professional insight on this matter.

It just came to my ear, that the british photographer Tony Ray-Jones (1886–1942) liked to make lists - in the first place for himself, but some of it also fits to myself.

• BE MORE AGGRESSIVE
• GET MORE INVOLVED (TALK TO PEOPLE)
• STAY WITH THE SUBJECT MATTER (BE PATIENT)
• TAKE SIMPLER PICTURES
• SEE IF EVERYTHING IN BACKGROUND RELATES TO SUBJECT MATTER
• VARY COMPOSITIONS AND ANGLES MORE
• BE MORE AWARE OF COMPOSITION
• DON’T TAKE BORING PICTURES
• GET IN CLOSER (USE 50mm LESS)
• WATCH CAMERA SHAKE (shoot 250sec or above)
• DON’T SHOOT TOO MUCH
• NOT ALL AT EYE LEVEL

// Printing Tutorials
I found some nice videos on printing in the darkroom. It’s not that pro, but it’s always good to see how others do it. Maybe have some mistakes in your own routines you are not aware of.

Edit:
What a portfolio. I must have it… (click)

(Ansel Adams, Meisterfotos)

// Beauty and art
Sometimes, I feel like that (Sorry for posting in German. Basically, it quotes Ansel Adams on the intellectual part in pictures and how it influences the image in beeing taken).

Just yesterday there was a Diploma/MA exhibition opening at the FH Bielefeld. Of course, I went there. Something was weird, though. Often, I had a hard time getting into the works. When that was the case, it was like feeling stupid. Usually, you see an interestingly staged image with an extraordinary lack of understanding for it. Then, you read the artist statement thinking okay, got it. You will re-visit the picture and it starts all over again.

For me, as I study in that same place, it was kinda strange to find myself thinking like that. It’s contemporary art. It should be hard to understand. Right? Or what..?

I guess my reaction that day way caused by the enormous depth every student wanted to bring into his work — okay, standard. They spent a lot of time on this, researching stuff. But lately, I’m not sure if pictures really benefit from the extend they’re encrypted. The remaining access seems to be the intellectual one. Is that enough? I have to think about it.

Still kinda strange to see a documentary video on conflict in Afghanistan (here by an — I guess — embedded photographer named Danfung Dennis), which has a cinematic look to it with all this small depth of field and superb colors.

Imacon Flextight scan. Usually I’m kinda annoyed by the fact, that it’s film holders won’t let me see the whole image. The result of that is the lack of the black border. But this time I’m actually okay with it.

// Larry Towell
Just now I’m doing some research for a presentation I have to do tomorrow. I’ll talk about Larry Towell. He is a really nice guy - and he can sing, too. I totally dig his great Leica camera song (how cool is that), but Amazon doesn’t let me buy it because I don’t live in the US.

It’s also available in the iTunes store, but again: only in the American iTunes store, where I can’t buy stuff. Oh boy, that’s what I call globalisation. If anyone knows a place where I can buy it, please let me know.

// Soup kitchen (start left)

Last winter I was shooting on a story for my reportage class in a soup kitchen here in Bielefeld. The topic we were given was called “Das Fest” (engl. “The celebration”). The confines were not too strict, so I decided to show the mini “Fest” the people over there have three times a week — especially when it’s cold outside and people only have a few bucks left in the pocket. Usually, thats at the end of the month. You can see the final selection when you click on the picture.
